It’s getting really frustrating for me. It seems to me like i’m doing a lot of things on my own. It’s not I mind. It’s just that when I started out on all the various projects, it was under a rather naive assumption that people would commit. But they don’t…or rather they show commitment in words rather than in action.

And now i’m left stranded with plans I cannot execute because while everyone is studying for exams, i’m trying to tie up all the other ends. Trying to do all that while having that nagging thought screaming, "You should be studying now." is a very draining process.

I’m beginning to think that most people are family oriented. They respect family obligations so much that they’ll do most of what they do because their parents demand that of them. In fact, I just spoke to a very old primary schoolmate of mine and asked him, "Why are you in computer engineering?" to which he replied that it was his mother that wanted him to do it.

Even when it comes to why a lot of people want work or start a venture but end up studying and burying themselves in textbooks and past year papers all year round, the general answer I get is, "Oh, i have to show something to my parents."

For the first time, I’m thinking that the Asian culture stifles us. There’s too much loyalty and honour. It’s one thing to want to grow up and take care of your parents. It’s a whole other thing to live for your parents.

I’m starting a new web development project with a schoolmate of mine who seems to be on the wavelength as me. We both don’t like how things are done in school, and we look beyond school. Hopefully, i’m right about him. And hopefully over the holidays we’ll plant the seeds to creating something that will rival the likes of some big names in the web application scene. (Oh, and we both are the main drivers for our project module.)

Everything can’t be a hobby. It’s a got to be a mission. A goal. Something you chase relentlessly till your mouth runs dry, your body goes numb and the voice in your head goes, "What the fuck?! Don’t give up on me now!"
