I’m not exactly sure what it’s about but i’m inferring that it’s about writing to your 12-year old self…
So here goes nothing…
Dear 12-year old Ridz,
You’ve been a bad bad boy. I know because it’s when you were in Primary 6 that you started not doing your homework. I also know that you sit beside some guy that never does his homework too and you’re evil enough to quickly answer questions in class so that you seem to be that smart guy who does all his work. I’m telling you to stop trying to cover own ass for shit that you didn’t do otherwise, it’ll only be when you go to Secondary 1 that you’ll realise how you’ll make the mistake of buying more time for the price of losing a possibly good friendship. Nevertheless, secondary school is going to be your defining period. Who you’re going to be for at least the next 10 years of your life will hinge on the friends that you will make in secondary school. Many of those guys will last you through life simply because they are who they are. Don’t be shy about being that nerd that you are…go ahead…join Computer Club and be the programmer in the lot. It’ll serve you well. And yes, if things get tough in the Student Council, suck it up. You’ll do just fine.I write this to you wanting to tell you what you should or should not do but I will not because I find that I am who I am because you will go through all the things that you will and I cannot fathom being any different.
I will part saying this though. Enjoy your secondary school days…treasure every moment. And when it ends…keep the fire going….
I’ll see you in 11 years…(just look in the mirror)
Yours,
23-year-old Ridzuan
Ramblings, Tributes: ping.sg, friends & Jenna
June 12, 2007 on 4:12 am | In Reflections | 12 CommentsI’m about to just sit here and ramble away so I won’t fault you if you decide not to read this post…
Blogging was so different when no one read my blog. It was so much more personal. Today, with my blog so connected to various aggregators, I’m forced to think if anyone would get offended or if my random expressions of crushes on old flames might cause a ruckus. Truth is, most of the time I try to stay true to why I write here and go ahead with offending them anyway or expressing my feelings either way.
I don’t blog because I have a cause that I’m championing. Neither do I blog because I want to make friends. And I definitely don’t blog for the attention…although I find it really sweet that people do read…and that people actually do care.
Ironically though, despite me wanting to remain isolated, the friends that have kept me sane from some time now were really those made online. A shout out goes to the ping.sg people.
At this juncture, I think I’ll write tributes to the online people who deserve tributes.
To Ping.sg
When I first joined ping.sg, I joined because someone(I can’t even remember who) said that it was a local blog aggregator…or was it because I was introduced to Uzyn when I went to some E27 unconference? Anyway, I don’t think Uzyn truly realizes what he’s created.
The official story is that this small little tool that he wanted to use so that he could read Singaporean blogs has flourished into a platform where the local blogosphere will come together – and better yet, a place where each blogger will have a voice.
But the truth is this. To me, it’s become a place where I’ve made real friends. People with whom I can talk to when I’m down. People with whom I share groundbreaking news and celebrate. People who drop me a text when they think something’s wrong. Being at a stage in life where friends come and go, ping.sg has become this little circle that I’ve come to adopt into my circle of friends…people who very quickly graduated from the “Acquaintances” section and into my “Friends” list.
And so today, roughly a month before ping.sg’s anniversary, I want to thank uzyn for creating this. But a bigger thanks goes to the community…and especially…(in no particular order)…Stephanie, DK, NTT, Terence, Adrian, uzyn, Sekling, Jiaying, Nicole, Hendri, ECL, Veron, Keropokman, Astroboy, Brennan, Kevin Lim, Cobalt Paladin, Paddy…I’m sure that there are more…
Thanks for being more than just a nick in a digital world.
To Jenna Rhoades
It’s amazing that we’re still in touch after losing contact like…4 times? It’s even more amazing how we met. How you came at a time in my life where I was so sad and angry with life….To have a stranger come by and actually care meant a lot to me. I look forward to the day that we’ll both meet up either here in Singapore or over there in Ohio. I’m sure we’ll have loads to share. Oh…you could teach me how to ride a horse! Reading your blog and hearing about your life, your strength amazes me each time I think about you…Keep smiling ya?
Hmm… I’m done. Everyone else that deserves a tribute isn’t exactly from the online community. So if you’re not mentioned, don’t be sad ya? Haha
It’s time to sleep. Class 95 is playing “Everything I do” by Bryan Adams.
Lovely.
